Busting the myths

Most people believe that the UPSC civil services examinations are conducted to select members of IAS, IPS, IFS, and IRS only. But the reality is, the UPSC CSE will recruit in as many as 23 different categories of civil services.

Difference between AIS and CCS

Every aspiring civil servant must know the significant points of distinction between all India services and Central civil services. IAS and IPS officers serve governments of various states in the country along with serving the central government. Hence, these two cadres are called All India Services. Officers of the IFS and IRS do not get the opportunity to work on behalf of the governments in any of the states. They work for the central government only throughout their career. So, when you apply to the UPSC civil services examination, you must prioritize those branches where intellectual needs will be satisfied.

The premier civil services

IFS and IAS are rated as the topmost in their respective categories. If you are selected as an IAS officer, you will not be allowed to appear for the UPSC civil services examination unless you resign from your position. The same rule applies even in case of officers of Indian Foreign Service. But, if you are recruited in any other civil service, then you can appear for UPSC CSE without resigning from your position. Hence, it is safe to say that the IAS and IFS are rated as the premier branches of all India services and central civil services respectively.

Citizenship requirement for various services

You must also bear in mind that, you are not eligible for all India services if you do not have citizenship of India. However, citizens of countries such as Nepal among others may also apply for central civil services. They will be treated at par with all the other applicants irrespective of their nationality. However, there are some other eligibility criteria that you must fulfill if you want to be considered a legitimate candidate for UPSC civil services examination.
