Document Required for Tamil Nadu RTE Admission 2025

The RTE admission process was delayed because of a funding issue between the state and the central government. The Union government had held back Rs. 2,151 crore under the Samagra Shiksha scheme. This scheme includes the funds meant for RTE reimbursements.

The central government stopped the funds because Tamil Nadu did not agree to adopt the three-language policy in PM Shri schools. Without this money, the state government could not reimburse private schools for RTE students, so the admission process was put on hold.

The issue was finally settled after legal action. The Madras High Court and later the Supreme Court got involved. The courts told the Union government to separate the RTE funds from the Samagra Shiksha scheme and release the money.

The Union government then said in a statement: “Following the directions of the Hon’ble Madras High Court and with the approval of the Union Education Minister, it was decided to release the funds for RTE entitlements.”

The School Education Secretary, B. Chandra Mohan, confirmed: “The Government of India has now released the funds, which has allowed Tamil Nadu to start RTE admissions for 2025-26.”

What is Right to Education (RTE) Act?

According to the Right to Education (RTE) Act, 2009, every child between the age of 6 to 14 years has the right to free education. Hence, Private, unaided schools must reserve 25% of their seats at the entry level (usually LKG or Class 1) for children from economically backward families. The government reimburses tuition fee to private schools for these students. The Centre and State share the cost in a 60:40 ratio. If any school collects fees from RTE students by mistake, it must refund the money within seven days.
