Surya Kant Becomes the 53rd Chief Justice of India

Justice Surya Kant has taken oath as the 53rd Chief Justice of India, replacing Justice B.R. Gavai. His term will continue until 9 February 2027, when he retires at 65. He was born on 10 February 1962 in Hisar, Haryana. He completed his graduation from Government Post Graduate College, Hisar, and earned his law degree from Maharishi Dayanand University, Rohtak.

New Labour Codes: Gratuity Eligibility Reduced to 1 Year

The Indian government has made a major change to the gratuity rules. Employees will now qualify for gratuity after 1 year of continuous service, instead of 5 years. This step aims to increase worker welfare and make gratuity rules clearer for all sectors.

Main Changes in Gratuity Rules

  • Fixed-term employees will get gratuity after 1 year of service.
  • The meaning of “wages” now covers more pay components, which increases gratuity amounts.
  • Gratuity will be calculated on a higher base salary, giving more benefits to employees.
  • Employers must pay gratuity within 30 days. If delayed, a 10% annual interest will apply.

Free Annual Health Check-Ups for Workers Above 40

The Government of India has enforced the four new labour codes by combining 29 older labour laws. Under the Occupational Safety, Health and Working Conditions (OSH) Code, employers must offer free yearly medical check-ups to all workers aged above 40. This move aims to improve preventive healthcare and ensure safer workplaces.
