IELTS Eligibility 2026- What you must know

IELTS (International English Language Testing System) is the most widely accepted English test in the world for study, work and immigration. Here is a simple and easy to understand guide to eligibility for IELTS in 2026, which test to take, ID and booking processes, eligibility related to your visa, validity of results, and useful hints and tips. All materials are from test provider and government sources.

What type of IELTS test do you wish to take?

Broadly speaking, there are three main types of IELTS tests offered:

  1. IELTS Academic – test for undergraduate/postgraduate study or professional registration.
  2. IELTS General Training – test for employment, training, or migration to some countries.
  3. IELTS for UKVI | SELT – a Secure English Language Test particularly assessed for applications to UK visas (these tests must be booked through approved centres). Ensure that your visa route stipulates the need for IELTS for UKVI.

Who can take the test?

  • Anyone can register and complete an IELTS exam with no real formal entry academic requirements or qualifications. Most students aged 16 and older undertake the test and whilst children under age 16 are not recommended by IELTS to take the test, candidates must be able to understand the tasks associated with the test and instruction to complete it.
  • For visa purposes the eligibility is related to the visa type (i.e., Skilled Worker, student visas) and guidance from the country of the visa; this has no association with the regulated test provider. Again, always check the immigration guidelines for the application for individual score or type for the test.

Identifications and Reservations Rules (Important Information)

  • When you book your test, you must upload or provide a valid and acceptable ID document (usually your passport). The same ID document must be presented during the test day (and for the speaking component also). Check the local test centre ID list (some centres will accept a national ID in some Countries).
  • You can only book with an official testing provider (British Council- www.britishcouncil.org, IDP- www.idp.com, or local IELTS Test Centres). You can take IELTS on paper and on the computer at an approved centre. Check the test-date availability and format before booking.

IELTS Eligibility 2026- Visa and Immigration Changes (Important for 2026)

Immigration rules change, and different visas require different CEFR levels of English. For example, from 8 January 2026, the UK announced that certain work visa routes will require a higher-level IELTS score in English (B2 CEFR). In practice, this will often mean test eligibility requirements such as having a minimum score of approximately 5.5 in each IELTS component for UKVI B2 route immigration visa applications.

Note: Check the exact score and test requirements on the GOV.UK page and your specific visa guidance

How long is the IELTS score valid for?

IELTS scores are generally valid for two years after the day of the test for university admissions and many employers. Many universities require the test to have taken place in the two years leading up to the start of the course (check each university’s policy).

Important eligibility checklist (quick)

  • Choose Academic or General Training (or UKVI if necessitated).
  • You are 16+ (recommended) and able to follow instructions at the test sit.
  • You have a valid passport or approved similar ID on hand to book and test.
  • You’ve checked the visa route requirements as early as possible, especially if this is an area that may change in 2026.
  • You arrange for your intended institution(s) or employers to take the IELTS Test and the test date is within the validation period (marking two years generally).

Practical tips for applicants

    • Book as far in advance as possible as test centres do fill up, particularly right before universities’ deadlines.
    • You arrive with the same ID as when you registered for the test (you cannot sit the test without ID).
    • You know the correct test for visa routes such as UKVI SELT IELTS vs standard IELTS, plus what is right for your university or professional registration.
  • You retain proof, knowing universities’ or employers’ minimum scores for each component (some for each skill must be met as minimum policy).
